Thoughts on moving

We moved to Star Valley, Wyo in August of 2023 and have moved 3 times since then (counting the initial move up here) in just 10 months. It goes without saying that we've got this moving thing pretty well down now although each move certainly holds its own unique difficulties. moving a homestead filled with open-ended projects feels like a hap-hazard polka dance with no fun music. Below are my tips and thoughts to help you and your homestead move if you are facing that 'dance' anytime in your future!

A key for us is to over-label. Label clothing bags with what's in them (pants, jackets, summer wardrobe, knickknacks, etc.). This is especially useful if you are putting items in storage. Even if you don't know the official name of a specific utensil, it is important to label it so that you know where/what it is (i.e. "Milk Foam Guy" (Frother)). Under labeling will only cause you confusion and anger later when you can't find anything you need.

Next, make sure you know your important rooms and the order that makes you feel productive and happy.

For us, we go: 1.) put the bed in. 2.) Put our bathroom necessities generally in the bathroom.3.) Get the kitchen fully set up. I am a happier camper if I am able to cook and move forward with my kitchen projects.

Finally, give yourself grace and space. After the initial big loads are in the house, take a break with your family and go do something just fun together away from the new house. This gives you a little mental break from the overwhelmed feeling of looking at all the unpacked boxes and the ability to return to the task with a fresh mind. I will note here that no matter what I do I always need to have a good cry a couple of days after moving. Once I have done this and had one day of just being a little down and out I seem to be able to move forward with more momentum and joy. So if you're like me, just give yourself the grace to have a bad and remember that the sun still rises in the morning.
